Tartan Empire Dress
[Shirt makeover]
Right on time for the school start! Today’s fashion tutorial shows you how to turn a casual flannel shirt into a perfect “Back to school” Empire waist dress. From Al Borland to Cher Horowitz in only 8 steps!
This DIY was also featured in the latest 7-8/14 issue of the German fashion magazine COUCH.
You will need:
- Tartan shirt
- Applique/crest
- Fabric in similar quality. Length: your desire length (from empire waist till down). Width: what ever width the fabric roll has.
- Sewing machine, pins, tape measure, ruler, scissors, thread for the sewing machine and charcoal
1. On each side of the shirt mark the spots where your empire line will lay. I measured about 3 cm (1.1″) above the waist. Then connect the marks with the ruler.
2. Cut through along the line. The shirt should be buttoned up.
3. Finish the edges with the zigzag stitch.
4. Secure all the edges of the bottom with the zigzag stitch, then fold it and sew the sides together with the regular stitch. Iron the seam flat.
5. Turn the top and bottom inside out. Place the bottom’s seam at the center back of the top and secure it with a pin. Pleat the skirt evenly along the shirt’s edge and secure the folds with pins.
6. Sew the top and the bottom together.
7. Fold over 4 cm (1.5″) seam allowance, iron it flat and stitch along it.
8. Attach the appliqué/crest onto the pocket or chest.
Back to school!
