Leather Applique Statement Sweater
[Sweater makeover]
Remember the time when a sweater was just a sweater and nothing else? It was a scratchy, boring clothing piece that supposed to keep us warm. Those times are definitely over. Still scratchy but not boring anymore. This days, thanks to the creative knit creations of the top designers, the cozy piece became the most popular item for chilly days. Forget the it-bag, the statement sweater is the new must-have fashion piece of the season. Whether it’s a folkloric ornament, slogan or applique- a real statement sweater has always a story to tell. And this DIY one says: “I love comics, cats and antiheroes!”
You will need:
- sewing machine
- leather needle for the sewing machine
- leather or similar material
- glue, scissors, thread, pencil, plastic gauge
1- Print out the pattern onto A4/letter format
2- Trace the pattern onto the back of the leather
3- Cut out
4- Apply glue to the back
5- Place the parts onto the front of the sweater and press them. Put a heavy book onto the appliqué and leave it for ca. 20 min until the glue dries
6. Before you start to sew put a piece of paper under the appliqué and pin the ends to the sweater. The paper helps to keep the appliqué in place.
7- Sew along the edges. Put the gauge between the feet and sweater for better transformation
8- Remove the paper
9- The appliqué might lose it original form while sewing. In that case stretch the parts back in form, then cover the appliqué with a piece of fabric and fix the from with the iron. Finished!
P.S.: Because of the delicate leather appliqué you can only dry clean or hand wash the sweater.
